With dirmngr 1.1.1-3:

$ strace -e connect dirmngr-client --ping
connect(3, {sa_family=AF_LOCAL, sun_path="/usr/var/run/dirmngr/socket"}, 29) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
