the upgrade to wine-0.9.9-1 doesn't give any characters, just squares instead of letters. I have en_US.utf8 and Swe in gnome, but starting my wine app it cannat show any letters any more.

Will downgrade to previous version, which does work and put it IgnorePKG = wine in pacman.conf

Which windows apps are you running to reproduce this?

I run NWC32EXE, i.e. NoteWorthy Composer a musicprogram like Rosegarden.

confirmed using the Noteworthy Eval setup. I will try to find a fix.
Comment by Dale Blount (dale) - Tuesday, 14 March 2006, 13:05 GMT
supposedly there's a fix commited to cvs that fixes it. I'm going to try to find and apply it to 0.9.9
Comment by Dale Blount (dale) - Thursday, 16 March 2006, 14:51 GMT
there's some good news and bad news...

good: 0.9.10 is out and uploaded
bad: problem still exists.
Comment by Arthur Danskin (wiremore) - Wednesday, 12 April 2006, 06:02 GMT
i had a problem with wine 0.9.11 where wine could not find any fonts. it was lookin in /usr/share/wine/fonts, which did not exist. making a symlink from /usr/share/wine/fonts to /usr/share/fonts fixes this. maybe this is related?
Comment by Dale Blount (dale) - Wednesday, 12 April 2006, 12:00 GMT
darn, it doesn't seem to fix it. I had hope for that workaround.
Comment by Börje Holmberg (linfan) - Friday, 21 April 2006, 11:17 GMT
Same problem with 0.9.12. I am still running 0.9.7-1, which suits my needs. I don't use wine for anything else, but this one app.

Happy spring time :)

hehe - wine-0.9.11-1 seems to have fixed the typo issue.

hrm, tpowa's 0.9.11-1 is still broken on my system...
Comment by Börje Holmberg (linfan) - Monday, 24 April 2006, 21:45 GMT
Sorry, something strange happened - I thought I had updated to 0.9.11-1, but I wasn't paying attention to the text - it just won't install this version of wine. Pacman complains it is corrupt, so I still run 0.9.7-1.
Comment by Dale Blount (dale) - Tuesday, 25 April 2006, 01:20 GMT
rm /var/cache/pacman/pkg/wine-0.9.11-1.pkg.tar.gz and try again.

Comment by arjan timmerman (blaasvis) - Wednesday, 07 June 2006, 17:48 GMT
status with 0.9.14 ?
Comment by Börje Holmberg (linfan) - Tuesday, 13 June 2006, 11:50 GMT
Status quo with both 0.9.14 and 0.9.15-1 - Just boxes. Still running wine-0.9.7-1.pkg.tar.gz from my home directory. As to wine upgrades it is marked IgnorePkg in pacman.conf

could you try taking it to the wine devs ?
Comment by Börje Holmberg (linfan) - Tuesday, 13 June 2006, 12:05 GMT
wine devs??? What is that and how do I do it?

linfan
Comment by Dale Blount (dale) - Tuesday, 13 June 2006, 12:27 GMT
I think arjan means to file a bug at http://bugs.winehq.org/ or ask the wine-users@winehq.org mailing list.
Comment by Börje Holmberg (linfan) - Tuesday, 13 June 2006, 12:50 GMT
ok! As long as I can run the NWC application with the 0.9.7 wine, I will wait. I only use wine for this single proggy. When and if it stops working, I will probably contact the wine developers and file a bug.

It is kinda complicated as I have utf8 support and xorg7 amd 64 processor etc. I don't know what all is required to inform the developers.

From earlier contacts with the winehq, I have found out that some apps work with some versions but not with others.

If it is only I who have this problem with this single NoteWorthy Composer program, that uses midi etc., this bug can be closed as far as I am concerned.

Thank you for your kind concern.

linfan

It is not the only program with the bug, I have seen it with others.

At some point the 0.9.7 package *will* cease to function, you might want to go about getting this looked at before that happens, not after.
Comment by Börje Holmberg (linfan) - Tuesday, 08 August 2006, 17:59 GMT
same result with 0.9.17 and 0.9.18

old 0.9.7 still roxx - hehe

Have been chatting on freenode #winehq and paste my conversation.

<killertux> linfan: you should do nothing since if Linux apps sees the fonts Wine sees them too.
* AStorm har avslutat (Remote closed the connection)
<linfan> unfortunately this is not the case :)
<killertux> linfan: so does other Linux apps see new fonts installed?
<linfan> all wine's after 0.9.7 fails - only gives me squibbles instead of fonts
<linfan> yes - they do
<killertux> linfan: so this is newly installed Wine?
* BBrox (i=BBrox@lns-bzn-26-82-254-124-170.adsl.proxad.net) gick in i #WineHQ
<linfan> i have tried all wines up to current but only 0.9.7 works
<killertux> linfan: well it's likely the fontforge too too old or missing.
<linfan> ok, how should the dependency look like for fonts - i will look in recent package build
<killertux> fontforge 20060408 is the oldest fontforge working correctly in with Wine.
<killertux> linfan: if it's older than that you do not see fonts.
<killertux> linfan: also if you run Xorg 7.1 that might also cause missing fonts.
<linfan> I have xorg
<linfan> but 0.9.7 works - strange - hehe
<linfan> depends=('libjpeg' 'libungif' 'alsa-lib' 'glut' 'openldap' 'libxslt' 'lcms' 'libxxf86dga' 'freeglut')

<linfan> ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --enable-opengl --with-x
<killertux> linfan: thing is old Wine versions have optional fontforge depency so it's not needed in old Wines. new Wines need fontforge.
<linfan> ok
<linfan> so what might be missing in ./configure above?
<killertux> linfan: just use default configure settings opengl and X is autodetected and /usr is not for self compiled packages.
<killertux> linfan: ./configure works for x86 systems.
<linfan> well, I use the distro package so I thought i might be able to fix this package
<linfan> what is the fontconfig package - I might put it in as dependency
* kukkaisrinsessa (n=kukkaisr@bb-81-175-226-195.dsl.phnet.fi) gick in i #winehq
<linfan> fontconfig 2.3.2-6 \ A library for configuring and customizing font access
<linfan> does it have to be built into wine or can it be installed separately?
* Strunkenbold (n=cracki@p54B50799.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) gick in i #winehq
<linfan> i could put in the depends 'fontconfig' - do I have to put in something in ./configure, too? --enable something or....?
* BBox har avslutat (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
<killertux> linfan: nothing in ./configure unless running x86_64
<linfan> ok
<linfan> trying to build the package from the script is says: requires: arts \ requires: sane
<killertux> linfan: and about fontfonfig it's not direct Wine dependcy but it might be dependly of some depenly that Wine uses.
<linfan> sorry, from the packagebuild
<linfan> ok
<linfan> i will first try with fontconfig
<linfan> it is already installed
<linfan> then i will try to just download the latest wine and compile it without any arguments

OK, chatting further on freenode #winehg I got it to work.

Later wines depend on fontforge which is only in the community repo. I used fontforge 20060413-1.

Then I downloaded the latest wine source and made a standard package from PKGBUILD.proto with these settings:

pkgname=wine
pkgver=0.9.19
pkgrel=1
pkgdesc=""
url=""
license=""
depends=('fontforge')
makedepends=()
conflicts=()
replaces=()
backup=()
install=
source=($pkgname-$pkgver.tar.bz2)
md5sums=()

build() {
cd $startdir/src/$pkgname-$pkgver
./configure --prefix=/usr
make || return 1
make DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg install
}
______________

I will paste the further chat until i succeeded, so you can follow up how it works.

* kung har avslutat ("Client exiting")
<killertux> linfan: this is not a Wine bug(likely).
<killertux> linfan: more likely package manager or/and user doing bad things.
<linfan> yeah, i figured it out after chatting with you, but the maintainer asked me to file a bug to wine - so instead i pasted this chat to our bug page
<linfan> i am compiling latest wine now with just the prefix /usr and will then install it and see if it works
<linfan> .... but it takes some time
<killertux> linfan: what did I just said... /usr is not for user compiled packages.. correct dir is /usr/local that is default in Wine.
* psyklops har avslutat (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
<linfan> so, do you you think i should abort the compilation and put in /usr/local instead as prefix - default for this distro on self built packages is /usr, though
* croppa har avslutat (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
<killertux> linfan: do as you like it should be no problem unless you are instaliling above exsisting Wine install.
<linfan> i will uninstall the existing one first and rm the .wine in /home
* mikearthur har avslutat (Read error: 54 (Connection reset by peer))
<killertux> linfan: so if you do not know that you are doing just keep one Wine version in your system.
<killertux> linfan: you are doing everyting wroung.
<linfan> ?
<killertux> linfan: ~/.wine is just Wine configuration registry syslinks and windows directory structure
<linfan> I now have wine-20050930-1.pkg.tar.gz
<linfan> which is 0.9.7 i think
<killertux> linfan: just do not say you are you have Wine installed and now you are installing second Wine version without removing the first one?
<linfan> i have an installed working windows app there now, so i will then leave the .wine dir - ok
<killertux> linfan: yes
<killertux> linfan: before you install Wine do not install it above other Wine versions.
<linfan> either i upgrade or uninstall current and install this new one, the latest one I am compiling now
<linfan> so I will uninstall wine-20050930-1.pkg.tar.gz and install wine-0.9.19-1.pkg.tar.gz if it compiles ok
<killertux> linfan: remove old Wine version(s) period. before installing new one.
<linfan> ok
* hoary (n=ken@p54A9A2AD.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) gick in i #winehq
<killertux> linfan: if you are doing installation with package manager it removes old version before new is installed.
<killertux> linfan: but package manager is not aware Wine versions you have installed manually from source.
<linfan> i will do pacman -U ***.pkg.tar.gz instead of -S
<linfan> I am building a package now - hehe
<linfan> i both compiles and runs make
_ _ _

<linfan> killertux: done and installed the new wine package - same result, not text just squibbles :(
* oiaohm (i=oiaohm@unaffiliated/oiaohm) gick in i #winehq
<linfan> as soon as I reinstall the old wine - all is fine
<killertux> linfan: fontforge version?
<linfan> fontforge 20060413-1, but it is not installed - it is not in official package database
<killertux> Skaag: read topic WineTools not supported here, and same for Sidenet ies4linux etc. and also for native IE6.
<linfan> and I don't have it installed
<killertux> linfan: then you do not see text.
* AStorm (i=astralst@gateway/tor/x-cbaeef1ba37799a5) gick in i #winehq
<linfan> i am installing it now from community repo
<linfan> but still no fonts
_ _ _

<linfan> does not work with official wine from distro neither with home built - Do I have to re-compile it after installing fontforge
<killertux> linfan: hmm... should work without recompile but you never now for sure so recompile.
_ _ _

<linfan> hehe killertux: now it shows text after installing fontforge and putting it in as depend and recompiling
<linfan> and midi works and all - hehe

Linfan

Thanks linfan, I will try to get this fixed in the official repository ASAP.
Comment by Dale Blount (dale) - Monday, 21 August 2006, 13:53 GMT
This should be fixed in the official wine package now. Please remove your fontforge and wine packages and try the wine package from extra.

Thanks Linfan for tracking this down, and please leave feedback if it works for you or not.

Comment by Dale Blount (dale) - Thursday, 31 August 2006, 18:11 GMT
Linfan? Is it working for you now?
Comment by Börje Holmberg (linfan) - Friday, 01 September 2006, 06:57 GMT
Yes, it is, thank you. I sent you a reply to your previous mail.

I did not seem to need fontforge or maybe there was some files from the previous fontforge that were not removed when uninstalling the previous fontforge package.

I also installed the wine-tools and got more functions as for instance print preview in my composer app.

Regards,

linfan
