emacs: error while loading shared libraries: libgif.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Emacs was rebuilt for the giflib update, specifically the -7 pkgrel. I'm downloading now to verify, but emacs is much too popular for this to have gone on for a month and a half without anyone noticing.

That seems incredibly unlikely indeed. However, given my system is up-to-date and my mirror is, according to the offical tracker, in sync, what else could cause this?

I just verified that the x86_64 version is linked to libgif.so.7, not libgif.so.6. i686 version is downloading.

Most likely it's a library that you've built locally (like from the AUR) that emacs links to, which is then linked to libgif.so.6.

Edit: i686 version is also correctly linked to libgif.so.7.

Strange, but it is very possible that something I build is still lingering somewhere.

Guess I have to reinstall my system.
This bug can be closed then.

No need to reinstall the system. First, try pacman -Qm and see what shows up. If it's nothing there, something like lostfiles in the AUR will show you what files are not tracked by pacman.

Unfortunately it doesn't show anything I would recognize as problematic though. I have no idea how something could actually make emacs suddenly be linked against libgif.so.6 though, so it may just be that.
