Description:
Unable to start scratch via default "scratch" startup script which executes:
$ /usr/lib/squeak/4.10.2-2614/squeakvm -encoding UTF-8 -vm-display-x11 -xshm -plugins /usr/lib/scratch/Plugins/:/usr/lib/squeak/4.10.2-2614/ -vm-sound-ALSA /usr/lib/scratch/Scratch.image

This results in an unresponsive GUI, and a black window if I try resizing it.

The problem is solved by running squeak manually and referring to the image as so:
$ squeak -vm-sound-ALSA /usr/lib/scratch/Scratch.image

Unsure what causes this...

Does it work by just removing -xshm ?
Comment by Vegard Haugland (v3gard) - Tuesday, 08 July 2014, 21:31 GMT
Removing -xshm also fixes the issue.

OK, for the time being just edit /usr/bin/scratch with a text editor and remove -xshm, while I try and work out what's wrong.

What video driver are you using?

Done. lspci reports that I have a "Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller". I am using the i915 graphics driver, provided by the package xf86-video-intel 2.99.912-1.
