Details

Description:variety does not change background, set date and clock, or add quote to gnome 3 desktop


Additional info:running gnome 3 desktop in bottom task bar but not working.
* package version(s)0.4.18-1
* config and/or log files etc.


Steps to reproduce:1.install variety
2. Run variety
3. see that it is not changing the background
   variety in task bar.png (1.84 MiB)

I was using Variety (the application for changing the wallpapers automatically) for quite some time on XFCE normally but now it doesn't work properly on GNOME 3 (it still works on XFCE).

It simply doesn't change the wallpaper. It chooses the wallpaper, informs (on the tray icon) as chosen but it cannot change the wallpaper somehow; just flashes and come back to the previous image.

This issue was first reported for GNOME 3.8, it was allegedly fixed upstream.

Developer here. The issues you link to were only applicable for the case when clock or quotes were enabled, because Variety was "reusing" the same filepath for the image on every change, this was fixed. If Variety does not work at all (even when selecting different images and with clock and quotes disabled), then the issue is most probably that the commands for Gnome in ~/.config/variety/scripts/set_wallpaper have become obsolete after some recent Gnome update or something else is preventing the file from running properly on Arch.

I am not an Arch user and don't have the time at the moment to set it up for testing (nor can I install the most recent Gnome). I'm looking for someone to help me debug this. Please raise hand in Launchpad, we'll continue discussion there:

Lucas Simões (kaslusimoes) can you confirm the updated variety packages (and removing ~/.config/variety/scripts/set_wallpaper) resolved this issue?
