Details

After upgrading i3-wm from 4.7.2-1 to 4.8-2 and rebooting, the navigation through different workspace is totally broken: I can't for example switch to workspace 1 or 2 or 0, the workspace icon (in the i3 bar) shows a workspace with '__i3_scratch' name when the scratchpad is hidden, see http://i.imgur.com/ASLZ9uE.png at the bottom left corner of the picture for an example.

Reverting back to 4.7.2-1 fixed the regression described above.

I understand you don't fix the source but would it be possible at least to include a patch from upstream, since it's totally unusable here otherwise.
