I tested it with original installation of xfce and lxde (no user customization) - still a problem with opera.

I also tested it with new installation of gnome 3 and opera.
On first opera startup (Activities - app menu selection) the gnome bug utility came up with opera bug, but it did
not allow me to read the bug report or send it to opera site.
Subsequent startups from menu or from xterm without problems.

Note: in the meantime the latest update to Chromium 35.0.1916.114-1 caused similar screen corruption on startup
as well.
I corrected both, Opera and Chromium corruptions, with "uxa" instead of "sna":
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

Also, Opera shows this error on first startup in xterm:
$ opera
/usr/lib/opera/opera_autoupdatechecker: /usr/lib/libcurl.so.4: version `CURL_OPENSSL_3' not found (required by /usr/lib/opera/opera_autoupdatechecker)

System is up-to-date:
curl 7.36.0-1
openssl 1.0.1.g-1

As of today, no screen corruption - there was no Opera update up to now, so it must have been fixed
thru graphics-related updates. Removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf .

Also, the startup error is gone.
It can be closed.
