Description:

The ulimit man pages are out of date, and don't describe the actions of any of the flags (except for -f, which is just about interpretable, but bizarrely cryptic)

The ulimit you run is a bash builtin. The manpage you've found only describes the POSIX behavior (notice the section name).

You want 'help ulimit'.
