Upgraded my IBM Thinkpad 600E using repos core, community, extra. Fully. Clean.

Linux 3.14.0-4-ARCH was installed. Rebooted. LXDE / X is not started properly. All I can see is a black screen with some pink lines at the top.

I can confirm this with the Same Issue for Gnome3 (Gnome-Shell).

GPU: AMD Radeon R7 260X
Kernel: Linux 3.14-4 x86_64

System is up to date!

Greetings

I think I have a similar issue with KDE. After the update, kwin crashes if desktop effects are turned on. The backtrace shows an assertion failure in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/i965_dri.so
Firefox is also very slow to start, presumable due to it unable to initialize hardware acceleration.

GPU: Intel HD Graphics
Kernel: 3.14-4 x86_64
Comment by AndrzejL (AndrzejL) - Thursday, 10 April 2014, 13:19 GMT
Let me add that the issue does not appears on the laptops with nvidia GPU (one uses 32 bit nvidia the other 64 bit nvidia-304xx drivers) both running KDE4.

Regards.

Guys. Come on. This bugreport is about an ancient neomagic chip that freaks out with a new kernel, probably because of changed framebuffer console settings in the new kernel. Your issues are completely unrelated to this.

Hi Jan.

Does it means that I am on my own with this issue?

Kind regards.

Comment by Egon Ashrafinia (Wubbbi) - Thursday, 10 April 2014, 16:18 GMT
So Jan,

When it is just that little issue, then Plesse tell me how I can fix that "little" issue and/or ajust the framebuffer.

For me it is an huge issue, my display ist flickering Form time to time, having a real corrupted display. The system is not currently not useable for me and thats a mayor, quality restricting, issue!

Also I dont have a neomagic chip. I have a radeonsi chip with the same issue.

Greetings

Don't piggy back on random bugreports. Your random comments don't help the reporter of this bug in any way and makes it impossible for us to close this bug without ignoring your issues. Open your own bugreport or choose an existing bug report that matches your problem description.

AndrzejL, your Xorg log includes "EE: Backtrace", but I see no backtrace beyond that. Could you provide that piece of log information? Without that information it's hard to debug this problem. It would also be nice to see dmesg output from your previous kernel version.

Note that neomagic is no longer developed upstream. When new xorg-server versions are released they port the API/ABI changes, but that's about all the maintenance these drivers get.

Hi Jan.

Thank You kindly for the additional questions. I would love to provide You with the information that You need however unfortunately that's the entire xorg log - there was nothing that I have snipped from it. How / where could I get the missing piece of information?

As for the dmesg from previous kernels here is the xorg log and the dmesg from the kernel 3.13.8-1-ARCH

I am very sorry to hear about the neomagic situation. This laptop - ancient as You mentioned - has served me well for several years. It would be a pity to see becoming unusable with latest kernels / frozen - without the possibility to upgrade.

Kind regards.

Today after upgrading to 3.14 I experienced a similar issue, and in my case the video card is a Radeon HD 6670, I fixed it setting the grub option gfxpayload to "text" instead of default "keep" which I detailed a bit more on the forums https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179829

Would be nice to know if doing the same fixes the issue for the reporter of this bug.

Hi Jeff.

As You have suggested I have edited the /etc/default/grub file and generated new grub.cfg and rebooted to a new kernel. I was met with a black screen and pink lines on top of it. Sorry - I was hoping for it to be the solution.

I have reverted the change and added:

nomodeset

to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line as suggested here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/kernel_mode_setting#Disabling_modesetting to disable KMS and see if that would change anything.

It didnt... The problem still exists so I have reverted the changes.

Kind regards.

I am not sure if its the same issue I am having but its always good to see people taking initiative and reporting problems / troubleshooting issues and sharing the results..

Thanks.

After removing all timestamps from your logs and sorting the output, there's not much difference between 3.13 and 3.14 output. Can you try to repeat the crash and fetch the missing backtrace eventually? If that fails, could you try replacing xf86-video-neomagic with xf86-video-vesa so we can check if this is caused by input drivers or video drivers?

Hi Jan.

Upgraded. Turned on the storage for journald to get slightly more detailed logs. Rebooted.

Xorg log, dmesg, journalctl, lxdm status: http://pastebin.com/ChNhkKjd I am hoping it will provide more information...

As You have requested I replaced neomagic with vesa and rebooted:

Xorg log, dmesg, journalctl, lxdm status http://pastebin.com/zPaZB14k

No X / LXDM. It looks like its trying to start LXDM but crashes... I am started to think LXDM may be to blame... Reverted to neomagic and disabled lxdm and enabled kdm service instead... That was a nogo as well...

Here are the logs with KDM service:

Kind regards. Thanks for the help provided so far.

Other people is reporting similar issue https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1403116 so I think this is not just a neomagic bug, radeon and some intel gpus also are affected.

my 8year old HP laptop (Mobile Intel (R) 915GM/GMS) just turned black before login(startx) with linux-3.14

And I press Fn+F9 (brightness key), backlight comes back. After startx, screen is black again, and I need to press again.

Hope this will work for you.

Unfortunately even if it worked I could not use this solution. Laptop's lid is permanently closed as the matrix is dead. On the closed lid I keep a nice AOC screen. I do not have a access to the laptop's keyboard (the fn keys) and I use a external USB keyboard and if I wanted to use the internal laptop's one I would have to take off the 15" external screen, open the lid, press the keys combo and so on. Even for a workaround that just won't do ;D. I have downgraded to the kernel 3.13.8 from the pacman's cache for now and ignored upgrading linux and linux-headers in the pacman.conf. I am removing those entries when I want to test solutions / provide logs but then I am reverting to it once its done.

Kind regards.

My story goes as follows,

I am using locally compiled xorg-server xorg-server-common combo for my SuperSavage card to maintain acceleration support (XAA) and the result after booting is a constant loop from virtual console to (intended and unsuccessfull) X display. Xorg stops logging after it arrives at,

[ 71.998] (II) LoadModule: "ddc"
[ 71.998] (II) Module "ddc" already built-in

After switching to vesa and the updated xorg packages X simply does not load (no loop) and ends up in a virtual console. The following errors appear in the Xorg log,

[ 30.864] (EE)
[ 30.865] (EE) Backtrace:

Upgraded to kernel -5 - no changes. Still no go.

echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

also a no go.

Thanks.

Upgrading to the latest xorg stuff from the stable repo didn't changed anything.

Upgrading to kernel 14.1-1 from testing didn't fixed it either.

Kind regards.

It seems to be fixed in version 3.14.2-1-ARCH. Rebooted twice just to make sure it wasn't some random fluke. All seems good.

Thanks guys for all the work You do.

Kind regards.
