Description:

mpd fails to start:

$ /usr/bin/mpd
/usr/bin/mpd: error while loading shared libraries: libx264.so.138: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
$ ls /usr/lib/libx264.so*
/usr/lib/libx264.so /usr/lib/libx264.so.142

mpd does not link to libx264.so

You're right. mpd doesn't link to libx264.so directly. It links to libavcodec.so, etc. from ffmpeg, which links to libx264.so. I happen to be using ffmpeg-full from AUR which was out of date.
