What video driver? This sounds more like a vid driver problem to me.

xf86-video-ati 1:7.3.0-1

Downgraded the video driver to xf86-video-ati 1:7.2.0-2 and upgraded kernel to 3.13.7-1, but glitches still remain. The twitching is still there. Even before I issue startx and start X.
My bet is kernel, but what do I know, I had a mostly carefree run until now :)

Open source drivers, then, which means the module lives in the kernel package. That tells me what I need to know to assign this.

3.14.0-2-ARCH fixes the problems.

If -2 fixes the problem, then it was related to X86_SYSFB/SIMPLEFB. This is supposed to do flicker-free handover from the firmware to Linux, but causes all sorts of problems right now. Besides, flicker-free handover from simplefb to radeondrmfb or inteldrmfb is not yet implemented.

EDIT: Wait, I said something wrong. If the problem was in 3.13 already, then the cause is another one. Anyway, closing as FIXED.
