The problem here is that help2man is required to build these manpages. Furthermore, the lirc build process isn't checking its error codes when calling help2man, so the error goes unnoticed.

This is definitely a bug; it results in empty manpages which cause the error you're seeing. I'll look into how hard help2man would be to build and maintain. Otherwise I'll be forced to remove the manpages altogether.
