After doing a full system upgrade, banshee failed to play files. Clicking on 'now playing' crashed the application with no error messages. Installing the optional package gst-plugins-good fixed both issues. I posted about the issue on bugzilla (725678). If this codec package is neccesary to prevent this crash (and at least for me, to play any files at all) then maybe it should be a normal dependency.

I've the same behaviour after updating to 2.6.2-3 and confirm that installing gst-plugins-good fixes all issues I was facing.

Thanks.

In my case Banshee didn't crash - it simply didn't play anything. Installing said package fixes problem.

Now I did full system upgrade and banshee refused to play any sound even with gst-plugins-good installed. Downgrading banshee to 2.6.2-1 fixed the problem.

Is banshee actually maintained by archlinux ?
Comment by Isenmann Daniel (ise) - Monday, 16 June 2014, 07:30 GMT
Yes it is. At the moment I have nearly no spare time. This will change the this week. So expect that I will try to fix it this week. Sorry for the long delay on this issue.

Thanks for the information and taking care of this. I'll wait for your changes then.

are you kidding ? The comments state that banshee is broken even with gst-plugins-good installed ...
Comment by Isenmann Daniel (ise) - Tuesday, 01 July 2014, 16:59 GMT
No, I'm not kidding. Installing the gst-plugins-good fixed the problem on my side. I can play .ogg or .mp3 files.
Even on the initial bug report at banshee's bugtracker, it's listed that installing gst-plugins-good fixes the problem. If it still not working then please post the output of "banshee --debug" here, otherwise I can't do anything. Thanks

Could you please re read the 3rd comment ?

Maybe you should try to install banshee on a minimal banshee, so you could see any missing deps ?

Did you mean this one:
"Now I did full system upgrade and banshee refused to play any sound even with gst-plugins-good installed. Downgrading banshee to 2.6.2-1 fixed the problem."?

Yes, I have read this. But without any further information from your side, I can't do anything here. Post the output of "banshee --debug". If you have the problem then please post the log.

sorry but I don't use banshee anymore, so I can't do the testing. Again you might trap this issue by trying to install banshee on a minimal system.

I'm trying banshee-2.6.2-4 on my system
now "gst-plugins-good" is a mandatory dependency and now banshee plays files fine
