Details

The mouse freezes for a few seconds just after the KDE startup window finishes. Not all machines that have been updated to the same extent are affected. Starting and stopping KDE applications also causes mouse freezeups sometimes.

The affected machines also have problems with sound. Xmms does not always work. The times when the mouse freezups occur appear to coincide with times when KDE would normally produce a sytem notification, e.g. KDE startup or closing a KDE application. Looking at the output of top when the problem occurs sometimes shows artsd consuming 50+% CPU for a short time. The affected machines sometimes have two instances of artsd running, whereas the unaffected machines only show one instance of artsd. The mouse problem can be fixed by disabling the sound system in KDE control centre.

The mouse and sound problems also occured on a completely fresh installation from the latest Arch CD (base only), followed by an update and installation of KDE.

perhaps it is fixed in 3.5.1 i cannot confirm the problem here, xmms problems might occur by arts not giving free sound device that can be tweaked in kcontrol.

Upgraded to 3.5.1 from testing. This fixed the mouse freeze on the fresh install machine. I have not tried the other affected machines yet.

On the upgraded machine, I see that there are still two instances of artsd running. Is this a problem? The documentation for artsd is a bit thin, but it does say that only one instance of artsd should be running.
