xf86-video-ati 1:7.3.0-1
mesa 10.0.2-1 and mesa-r300-r600-radeonsi-git 60939.80bf1fb-1 (same behaviour)

I discovered that every now and then my X crashes. This never happened when I was on Catalysts.
The screen freezes. Than goes blank for a second, and comes back, but it does not accept any input anymore - not from mouse, nor keyboard.

I have to ctrl+alt+F2 to another console to kill X, which will then restart and work fine until another crash, which may or may not happen after hours.

Here is xorg log:

It gets worse. Just now, I had a similar crash, except worse, because now it filled with vertical artifact strips not just the X session, but even separate console ttys:

I have a radeon HD4650 pcie and this bug can occur in a rare conditions,

for example If I use kaffeine ( a dvb-t software ) and if "vdpau" is enabled in xine config file then a similar random bug can occur ( X will crash, frozen screen, then black screen with an automatic reboot of X ),

I use r600 driver from mesa 10.0.2-1 and I use also xf86-video-ati 1:7.3.0-1,

a workaround is to be careful with "vdpau" features and other softwares who use "UVD" opengl acceleration for h264, with flashplugin, xine ( kaffeine ) these features can sometimes trigger a random bug,

but with mplayer ( or smplayer ) with vdpau I never see crashs

I also sent this bug upstream to the mesa team, as I am not certain where the cause lies: Arch implementation, or Mesa itself. But my money is on the original source.

I am having similar issues. Have you tried the latest 3.13 kernel in the testing repository? I have not yet tried that.
Comment by asfa (lockheed) - Tuesday, 11 February 2014, 07:56 GMT
I have tried kernels up to 3.14 rc. Same problem. Which I why I went back to catalysts.

Same issue; intermittent crashing of X. Sometimes I can't even CTRL+ALT+F{2,9} and am forced to hard reboot after crash.
