Detailsgdm does not start at all.

This is caused by -4, which changed all your /usr/X11R6 paths to /usr in /opt/gnome/etc/gdm/gdm.conf. There's a pacnew file in there you might want to use. The -5 version of gdm shouldn't have problems with non-testing setups AFAIK.
