iw provides the same functionality as the deprecated[1] wireless_tools and is already present on installation media (via crda). Can we drop wireless_tools from the medium?

if "iw" provides the same functionally maybe you can ask to remove wireless_tools from repos ;)

wireless_tools is still required by quite a few packages: https://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/x86_64/wireless_tools/

In theory someone could port them to iw, sure, but it's not a trivial job: the arguments and output of many programs are different...

Indeed: there are still a few packages depending on wireless_tools in the repositories. It might be too soon to drop it completely.

On the ISO however, there are no packages depending on it, so I don't think we need to keep it on there.

Agreed, wireless_tools and wext need to die. All (and more) functionality is provided by wpa_supplicant and iw.
