Upgraded and wanted to refresh my /boot/grub/grub.cfg and got this:

Similar errors on other machines.

Known issue with known workaround: add the following to /etc/default/grub

# fix broken grub.cfg gen
GRUB_DISABLE_SUBMENU=y
