Details

The tomcat6.service file directs stdout to /var/log/tomcat6/catalina.out which eventually fills up the whole hard drive.
If this is changed to the (undocumented?) magic value SYSLOG then the output gets sent to the journal where it can be handled correctly.
The same appies to stderr, and probably also to tomcat7.

True: systemd/syslog integration could be nice here. Will work on this but let me know if you come up with something.

I took the opportunity of pushing tomcat8 to extra to implement your suggestion. Could you please install tomcat8 and confirm logs can be seen through journalctl instead of /var/log/tomcat8/catalina.{out,err} files?

Package tomcat6 now also uses syslog as main logging facility.
