Description:
Up to kernel 3.11.5-1-ARCH, all's fine.
With kernel 3.11.6 or 3.12, I get:
"systemd[1]: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules."
which leads to all kinds of bad effects, such as NFS and ZFS failing, and X11 freezing.

Additional info:
* linux-3.11.5-1-x86_64 linux-headers-3.11.5-1-x86_64 spl-utils-0.6.2_3.11.5-1-x86_64 spl-0.6.2_3.11.5-1-x86_64 zfs-utils-0.6.2_3.11.5-1-x86_64 zfs-0.6.2_3.11.5-1-x86_64 virtualbox-host-modules-4.3.2-1-x86_64 => ALL'S FINE.
* Newer packages, see Description => FAIL.
* Graphics card (the culprit, IMHO):
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV740 PRO [Radeon HD 4770]
03:00.0 0300: 1002:94b3

Please don't hesitate:
- to ask for more information,
- to point me to upstream if applicable (I have a kernel bugzilla account and I'll gladly do as instructed).

Sounds like you have a mismatch between your kernel version that's installed and the one you're booting off of. I suggest you compare the output of 'uname -r' and 'pacman -Q linux'.

The particular service failing is systemd-modules-load.service and it relies on loading modules from /etc/modules-load.d and /usr/lib/modules-load.d. This has nothing to do with the usual module loading which happens during udev coldplug (udevadm trigger). If you have modules other than those listed in the .conf files in the directories I mention, then I strongly suspect that my original suspicion about a kernel version mismatch is true. This isn't a bug, but user error.

When it is working OK, I have:
$ pacman -Q linux
linux 3.11.5-1
$ uname -r
3.11.5-1-ARCH

That's not an exact match, but still, I'll look at what happens with a newer kernel...
That would be a surprising cause, though, because I just upgrade, that's all! So "user error", why not, but at what step??
Let me test the upgrade now...

Kudos to you, Dave!
When it is NOT working, I have:
$ pacman -Q linux
linux 3.12-1
$ uname -r
3.11.5-1-ARCH

Now the question is: what do I do? Never before did I have to care about a file to edit when upgrading the kernel with pacman, nor did I see a news item recently about this subject on https://www.archlinux.org/news/ ...

Again, this is user error.

Was your /boot not mounted? Did you not copy the kernel/initramfs to the ESP?

I have no context as to what your setup is. I'm closing this, because it isn't a bug. If you need further support, please use the BBS.
