the root () does this for you if you set root to /boot then /boot is obviously not needed.
I had it with /boot and I followed your echo and thank grub it had E (to edit) the lines on the fly and then boot as without /boot it's unbootable
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda3 vga=0x317 ro elevator=cfq quiet
initrd /initrd26.img
the root () tells you if boot is needed ot not.
eg. some have boot on seperate partition then it's not needed.
