Details

Description:
The speaker icon on the system status and the headphone icon in the system status menu are not drawn like they should (based on gdm screenshots I've seen around).

This is because we disabled autospawning of PulseAudio here: https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/commit/trunk?h=packages/pulseaudio&id=fc89abba5f19e768397f4188a59028a8a17c434c
So PulseAudio does not get launched in the GDM session and the volume controls do not function. I'm not sure, if volume controls are useful in the login manager. Perhaps Gnome should disable them completely in GDM.

I enabled it in /etc/client.conf and GDM appeared as expected. Perhaps due to accessibility options (such as the screen reader) the volume controls are there in the first place...

Yes, didn't think of that. So PulseAudio is necessary for GDM and it should get started somehow.
