Details

If you install the audit package from community and rebuild pam, libpam.so will be linked to libaudit.so, but the package will miss the dependency on audit. This, for example, breaks useradd.

We could explicitly --disable-audit to avoid this.

And if you build your packages (properly) in a clean chroot, you don't run into this.

What's the problem here?

Well, it is somewhat confusing/annoying if you don't build in a clean chroot. Not a big deal though, if it's general practice in archlinux to build within a chroot feel free to close this. Thanks for the quick answer.
