gedit starts fine here. Is your system fully up-to-date?

Your gtk3 package is either outdated (not 3.10 at least), or you have some old libs floating around on your system.

OK, you were right - AUR package (gtk3-appmenu) was holding up gtk3. Thanks for help, issue resolved.
