FS#37019 - [mkinitcpio] "Upstream URL" shows www.archlinux.org, which is "imprecise", as in "wrong"

Description:

Name : mkinitcpio
Version : 0.15.0-1

The mkinitcpio web page lists "Upstream URL: http://www.archlinux.org/";, and a "pacman -Qi" for the package shows "URL : http://www.archlinux.org/";. However, a visit to "http://www.archlinux.org/" fails to show a description of the package "mkinitcpio". By that criteria, I would argue that the listed URL is "wrong".

The correct Upstream URL seems to be "https://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/any/mkinitcpio/", where useful information about the "mkinitcpio" package can be found.

Please be more precise about the URL for the "mkinitcpio" package _Source_, in both the package description and on the "mkinitcpio" web page. For those who have not _already_ discovered that the "mkinitcpio" package is an Arch Linux sourced package, this makes a difference. It provides no service to the user to "presume the conclusion", that they already know what you are telling them.

Thanks

Our package information webpage is not the proper upstream URL either. That would be https://projects.archlinux.org/mkinitcpio.git/ .

Hmm - so then, what would be the proper way to set the URL? If there is a distinction to make between an information web page and an actual source-code web page - hmm - I would think that the information web page would be more useful to someone searching for information, to start, and that the information web page should have a link to the source-code web page. .../mkinitcpio has a link "Source Files" which points to
https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/tree/trunk?h=packages/mkinitcpio
which is something else again. Sigh...

But then, if the package URL is the "Upstream URL", and not specifically the "Source URL", then the "proper" mkinitcpio URL would be the information page, presumably the starting point for the upstream project.

The information page you are talking about describes the Arch Linux package for mkinitcpio, not the upstream project. The latter has no information page but the github summary page.

Well, now I'm totally confused. Are you saying that the git repository _is_ the "upstream project" page for "mkinitcpio"?
Comment by Dave Reisner (falconindy) - Sunday, 22 September 2013, 15:07 GMT
There is no "upstream project page" for mkinitcpio. In lieu of that, the gitweb page seems like a reasonable substitute.

There seems to be a section of the gitweb page that shows an introduction, which currently contains the text "The official mkinitcpio repository". Would it be possible to add more content there, with some history and context? For instance, "What is 'mkinitcpio'?", "Who started it?", "When did it start?", "Who presently maintains it?", etc. A few of these things could be taken from the Arch Linux info page.

No, this is gitweb. It's a web view of the source repository.

Like most things in Arch, mkinitcpio has a wiki page.

> Like most things in Arch, mkinitcpio has a wiki page.

... Presupposing that the user, intent upon "sussing-out" mkinitcpio, _already_knows_ that mkinitcpio is an "Arch thing" - "presuming the conclusion".

I actually discovered that myself, that mkinitcpio was developed by, and as part of, Arch, after stumbling upon a Gentoo Linux posting discussing mkinitcpio. Perhaps you could add a note to the gitweb page suggesting "Search random Gentoo postings for more background information about mkinitcpio."?

I'm simply trying to explain what landing pages *do* exist so that we can figure out what a better target is. You seem rather invested in this (though I'm not sure why). Was it not obvious that mkinitcpio is an Arch Linux project from the use of the Arch homepage as an upstream URL?

I'll happily close this as WONTFIX if you're going to continue to antagonize.
Comment by James (thx1138) - Monday, 23 September 2013, 18:51 GMT
Sorry no, it was not obvious to me. There are many, many packages with Arch information pages. Not all of them are Arch-homed projects.

The git web page would be a better target URL than the "generic" Arch home page.

> Like most things in Arch, mkinitcpio has a wiki page.

In context, that was a "slap in the face"/"throw-away" discount on your part. Or did you not get how that would come across?

I was just trying to offer some feedback from an "outsider" point of view. It is your project. Obviously, you can do whatever you like with it.
