The example configuration for PHP is unusual (has scripts in a different directory) and doesn't support PATH_INFO. The package should probably contain these instead: http://wiki.nginx.org/PHPFcgiExample BTW, /etc/nginx/fastcgi.conf and /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params are duplicates.
