after upgrading some packages, steam ceased to start properly: http://paste.kde.org/p2e7ece7c/

it just spins up the CPU and outputs some (afaik irrelevant) messages: http://paste.kde.org/p8120175b/

when started as STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam, it gives more information, but nothing i can make sense of: http://paste.kde.org/p458fc19f/

the most interesting part is:
Assert( Assertion Failed: ClientAPI_InitGlobalInstance: InternalAPI_Init_Internal failed, most likely because you are missing a 32-bit dependency of steamclient.so (the Steam client is a 32-bit app).

so what’s missing?
This task depends upon

Reason for closing:  Upstream
Additional comments about closing:  it was an update in the steam beta stuff, you can always backup Steamapps directory and use steam --reset

I had the same issue. So I moved away all the ~/Steam and ~/.steam* dirs and started over.

and it worked?
Comment by Pierre Schmitz (Pierre) - Friday, 13 September 2013, 17:12 GMT
Yes, pointed it to the old SteamApps folder to restore all the games.

I was on Steam Beta before and now on stable.

ah, maybe that’s the problem. i deleted everything except ~/Steam/SteamApps, i hope it’ll work

thanks!

works. now it would be interesting to do it without user interaction or at least by only deleting the one offending file (if applicable)

Deleting the Steam/appcache folder has the same effect. But it works only once. The next steam start will be failed again.

EDIT: It's the file Steam/appcache/appinfo.vdf.

Also interesting; after re-installing the Steam directory is now at ~/.local/share/Steam instead of ~/Steam. Anyway, this looks more like an upstream bug in Steam itself.

it has been in ~/.local/share/Steam by default since we got them to switch to using XDG default locations back around when the source tarball was released
