Description:

As you are familiar, the new 3.11 kernel introduces DPM (dynamic power management) for Radeon graphic cards. To my experience, it is in a very bad state. If you drag window around you can get the impression the screen is being refreshed only approximately 5 times a second (5 FPS).

Contrary to what you'd expect, the fan runs like crazy and temperatures skyrocket.

I have Mobility Radeon HD 4300 (laptop graphic card).

Steps to reproduce: Have a graphic card similar to mine and install linux 3.11 from [testing].

I have since donwngraded, but if you want, you can accumulate the questions for me and I'll upgrade again.

radeon dpm isn't enabled by default, so don't expect it to be perfect. What you are doing is filling a bug tracker with your rant about an experimental feature, there is forums, your blog, ... for such post.

If you want the situation evolve positively, please fill a bug report upstream, and please, don't open a new bug report here.

I did not enable DPM. The kernel runs with stock parameters.

If what you are saying is true, then the problem lies somewhere else, not DPM. It is a problem.

Have you cherry pick the the kernel from testing? If so have you also cherry pick the linux-firmware package ?

I have cherry-picked both linux and linux-firmware packages.

All other are at stock, fully upgraded.

I'm running 3.11 with KDE. I have not experienced any performance issues with DPM Enabled or disabled. Your issue might be GNOME specific, or card specific?

My graphics card is HD 4570.
