Description:

With all the new 3.10.x linux kernel most of the graphics in Gnome Shell is corrupted (buttons not shown, missing text and icons in application windows, etcetera). Switching back to 3.9.x kernels solves the problem. The computer is a Dell Precision M6500 notebook with AMD RV740 graphics card. The driver is ati-dri 9.2.0-1. The system is up to date. I include the output from dmesg and the Xorg.log file with the last kernel (3.10.9) and, for comparison, the same files with kernel 3.9.9, where everything is ok.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
3.10.x

* config and/or log files etc.
output of dmesg with kernel 3.10.9
Xorg.log with kernel 3.10.9
For comparison : the same files with kernel 3.9.9 (correct video acceleration)

Steps to reproduce:
Install newer 3.10.x linux kernels

Kernel 3.10.10 solves the bug. However, when hibernating the following error messages are shown on the console :

radeon 0000:01:00.0: GPU lockup CP stall for more than 10000msec
radeon 0000:01:00.0: GPU lockup (waiting for 0x0000000000000006 last fence id 0x000000000000
[drm:r600_uvd_ib_test] *ERROR* radeon: fence wait failed (-35).
[drm:radeon_ib_ring_tests] *ERROR* radeon: failed testing IB on ring 5 (-35).

The hibernation then completes and the resume is apparently also ok. However, after resuming the X server (under Gnome Shell) keep crashing, for instance when trying to resize a window. Various error messages are logged, such as

XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0"

Gdm is run again and, upon login, the X server again crashes like before. After rebooting the system becomes again stable.

Status on 3.11.1?
Comment by John Good (archiesix) - Tuesday, 17 September 2013, 10:20 GMT
The hibernation problem persists in 3.11.1 (see my post on linux kernel bugzilla, bug #60827)
