Details

When ARTS starts up for any purpose - testing the audio system, playing an MP3, etc. - my cursor freezes and my machine ceases to accept input for 1-2 seconds, during which there is no sound output. According to the KDE system monitor, this is associated with an immediate spike of CPU usage to about 65%, not what I'd imagine to be the sort of spike that would cause temporary freezes. There is no similar spike in RAM usage.

So far, I haven't had to hit the interrupt button, but it doesn't seem right that starting a sound server should cause one's machine to temporarily refuse input. I'm sure there's something fishy going on.

do you have akode installed? If yes please uninstall it

Nope, I don't have any package called "akode" installed, and and can't find anything of that name in my filesystem.

(FWIW, "akode" is not to be found in any of the main repos or the AUR either.)

One more little development: I've stopped using ARTS as my sound server because of the way it hogs the audio channels. The thing is, Noatun, Kaboodle, etc. still cause this mini-freeze... This seems to be a problem with KDE's playback engine, not with the sound server. A bit strange, it seems to me, since IIRC the engine is based on Xine and Xine definitely does not have this problem... But here it is.

Okay, fixed as of kdemultimedia 3.5.1-3. It appears that the problem was akode *not* being installed...
