DetailsI reinstalled texlive and noticed that I also had to remove ~/.texlive to get rid of the "(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)" error. Maybe the news entry should be updated.
Here are some logs: pdflatex brownies.tex This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.5-1.40.14 (TeX Live 2013/Arch Linux) restricted \write18 enabled. ---! /home/michael/.texlive/texmf-var/web2c/pdftex/pdflatex.fmt doesn't match pdftex.pool (Fatal format file error; I'm stymied) |

You are not supposed to obtain format files in your home directory when using the standard Archlinux packages.
