Description:
Mpd is compiled without pipe output support at the moment, so specifying 'type "pipe"' for an output throws an error. I don't know if this has any drawbacks, but I doubt it.

Fix:
Add "--enable-pipe-output" configure option.

Well if you look at mpd's configure script, you'll see that there are quite a few features which are disabled by default.

Could you at least say a few words on why you'd find the ability to write audio to a pipe useful?

Sure, I'm able to send radio (FM) with my raspberry pi and by piping into the sending program from mpd I try to build a small remote controllable radio station. There are a few other examples on this page: http://www.diyaudio.com/oldwiki/index.php?page=LINUX+Audio+MusicPlayerDaemon
