Details

- for scsi cdroms no nodes are created - like /dev/scd0 - so one can not load modules from the scsi
- for sata cdroms no notes are created - as the kernel is still unpatched to support sata-atapi, I think the patch would be helpfull for pure sata systems, wouldn't it
- you can't switch keyboard layout so native languaged people are somehow stuck trying to type simple commands like "ls /dev/ | grep cd" or "ls /dev/scd*"
- autoprobe of network modules fails (maybe as a result of issue 1 and 2) at least for forcedeth and sklin98
- some fs are not supported without modprobing, like jfs, xfs
- hwdetect is not running nor available

Maybe I missed something, I am not able to test very much as I use a german keyboard, and can't find the keys for /()=0?'+~\|* when I needed them

Good luck :)

Could you tell me what your scsi CD-ROM devices show up as in /sys/block? And does it have a "removable" file in it?

Eg, with an IDE CD-ROM, it appears (for me) as /sys/block/hdc. And it has a /sys/block/hdc/removable file that says "1".

I need this info to auto-load modules from scsi CD-ROMs at boot-up.

it is /sys/block/sr0
it does include "removable" that reads "1".

Btw, grub install fails on xfs, but not on jfs.

Thank you.

The GRUB breakage on XFS has been plaguing me for awhile. Try repeating the GRUB installation attempt again. It has worked well in the past as a workaround.

So /sys/block shows your CD drive as sr0, but the device you access it with is /dev/scd0, major 11, minor 0?

Yes, I create the nodes for cds running
mknod /dev/scd0 b 11 0
mknod /dev/scd1 b 11 1
etc.

The grub install runs in second attempt. Thank you very much, seems to be only some scsi users around. Whenever you need a test for scsi, feel free to ask me.
