When trying to build a program (impc) that requires jsoncpp, but pkg-config doesn't find it because there's no jsoncpp.pc file:

checking for jsoncpp... no
configure: error: Package requirements (jsoncpp >= 0.5) were not met:

No package 'jsoncpp' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables jsoncpp_CFLAGS
and jsoncpp_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

Somewhat unrelatedly, jsoncpp is out of date.

Erm, jsoncpp is not out of date. 0.6.0 is currently RC2, not an official release. The main purpose of the bug report still stands, though.

Upstream doesn't provide a jsoncpp.pc file. Not in 0.5.0, not in the 0.6.0rc versions available. These files are added by Fedora and Debian though.

I see. Thanks for the information.

I'm making a package for impc[1], which uses jsoncpp and tries to find its options via pkg-config. Would the best thing to do here be to create a package containing the pkg-config file and submit it to the AUR (like [2])? Or would it be to simply modify impc's build process to include jsoncpp manually without going to pkg-config?

Submit it upstream. That's the best way to get it included....
