when installing php-gd, the gd package isn't installed along with it, though php-gd depends on gd.

What makes you say that? php-gd does not depend on gd.

Seems like the issue I was having was unrelated to such a dependency.

vnstat could not generate png files for display, which was what php was reporting as an issue. But that issue pertains to gd not being installed for vnstat to access, rather than php-gd being unable to generate the images.
