I just realized that the latest update of grub actually renames /boot/grub/menu.lst to menu.lst.pacsave.

I my case this led to that I was just shown the grub prompt at next reboot. Since I'm not experienced with grub, I had to boot from a rescue disk and copy the file back to the right filename.

Best regards,
Øystein

Had you ever updated to grub2?

It appears that the latest upgrade not only renames menu.lst but also updates grub:
[2013-06-24 09:55] [PACMAN] upgraded grub (0.97-21 -> 2.00-1)

This requires manual intervention: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Grub#Installation

After following the instructions my system is bootable again.

It surprises me that this automatically happens.

Yes... the 0.97 version of GRUB has been unsupported for almost a year. https://www.archlinux.org/news/grub-legacy-no-longer-supported/
