I'm suffering from the same issue. Even editing ~/.config/transmission/settings.json directly doesn't help, as the file gets reverted when transmission starts. I only noticed the problem with some settings and not others though.

From my forum post here:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162223

When I do file -bi on setting.json I get this:

application/octet-stream; charset=binary

When I do it on my Fedora installation running 2.77 as well I get this:

text/plain; charset=us-ascii

So it looks like it may be some kind of file encoding problem. The directories names get saved with odd messed up characters like you get when you view Unicode text without the appropriate font.

Why is this low severity? It makes Transmission barely usable: each time you want to download a torrent you need to manually specify the location; it's never correct by default.

The default locations are all screwed up. Right after removing the config file:

"download-dir": "/home/felipec/en_US.UTF-8",
"incomplete-dir": "/home/felipec/en_US.UTF-8",
"watch-dir": "/home/felipec/`7",
