Details

Description:
When dragging the volume all the way down in xfce4 panel's volume control item called 'Audio mixer', many other channels in the mixer get muted and are not unmuted when dragging the slider back up. You have to manually open the audio mixer and unmute the channels.

Steps to reproduce:
1) In xfce4, add the 'Audio Mixer' item to a xfce4 panel
2) Drag the Audio Mixer volume slider all the way down
3) Drag the slider back up, and there will be no audio output until you open the mixer and unmute the channels

I was unable to replicate this on any of my machines, so it appears to be hardware specific.

You could try reporting this issue to Xfce's bug tracker (link below) and/or install the volumeicon package to see if that works better for you.
