Hi Judd
your last update to rc.sysinit removed the locale.sh stuff, that was needed for vc's
my system vc's doesn't work anymore with utf.

Which part is failing? Switching the consoles to UTF-8 mode? The locale stuff is still in there, I just changed the code to switch each VC to UTF-8 mode only once, at bootup. Before, each time you'd login you would see a stream of 'G' characters, because locale.sh was echoing "\033%G" to the console twelve times.

I followed Gentoo's example for switching consoles.

I don't use unicode. If you can tweak rc.sysinit to switch the consoles without echoing all the G characters, please send me the patch.

fixed in rc.sysinit update, added the echo thing again without the seq 1-12 now vc's work after login.
