Description:
Cannot enter alternate entry mode in VTE-based terminal emulators such as termite, gnome-terminal, sakura. This may be true of all GTK3 applications.

This report explains why SCIM does not build gtk3 immodule: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33113

Nevertheless, gtk3 should work through XIM. I seem to recall it used to (but could be wrong), so this could be a bug in recent gtk3 releases. If you have the chance to downgrade scim and/or gtk3 to earlier packages, that could be very helpful.
