A full update (pacman -Syu) on my Arch system with xfce caused random crashes of the X server. At random moments, e.g opening/closing windows. the X server crashed and reverted back to the login screen. The 'log out' command did the same without prompting me the option to shut down/reboot/etc.
The logs show "xfce4-session core dump", nothing more explicit.

After some googling, I found on several forums that this problem was rether widespread, and caused by the version 2.36.1-3 version of glib2. I Downgraded to 2.36.1-1 and it solved this problem perfectly. Therefore I think that there is something wrong with this version.

The problem seems specific to Xfce.

Package version : glib2-2.36.1-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

If your problem is the same as this: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/34980

Then it should have been solved with xfce4-session 4.10.0-7. If thats not your issue, then I apologize for the noise.

a new xfce4-session was released to fix this issue. Please test that version as stated in the last user comment.

My problem looks indeed rather similar to the one you link to. I don't use Compiz though, just basic XFCE install.
I installed the current version xfce4-session-4.10.1-1, and re-upgraded to glib2-2.36.1-3. Since the problem is about random crashes I can't tell you right now if this fixes the issue (the problem doesn't appear to be very reproducible). I'll update in a few days and tell you if it's better or not.

After another full upgrade, it seems that the issue is finally fixed.
I now have glib2-2.36.2-1 and xfce4-session-4.10.1-1 and it works fine again.
