Description: netctl does not seem to support plain ppp (not pppoe) connections, like eg those used with 3g cards. Netcfg did support them.

Additional info:
* netctl 0.8-1

If it's possible and I'm just missing it, please let me know. Thanks.

For the simplest PPP connections, the ppp package provides a service file that does the same as netcfg did. This has little to do with the logic that netctl implements, so netctl does not offer this functionality.

For 3g cards, netctl has something to offer. Therefore, netctl 1.0 (currently in [testing]) offers the mobile_ppp connection type.
