Details

darktable starts, but most features do not work correctly, e.g.:
- active mode (lighttable/darkroom/etc.) is not highlighted
- lighttable: image information on the left-hand side is always empty
- lighttable: image selection needs two clicks instead of one
- darkroom: history is always empty
- darkroom: image is not always updated when zooming
- darkroom: selection of different images at the bottom does not work
- tethering does not work at all (camera is not detected)
- map: images are displayed at wrong locations

When started on the console numerous warnings are displayed, e.g.:
(darktable:3029): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid (NULL) pointer instance
(darktable:3029): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_emit_valist: assertion `G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed
(darktable:3029): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_lookup: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_INSTANTIATABLE (itype) || G_TYPE_IS_INTERFACE (itype)' failed
(darktable:3029): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_handlers_disconnect_matched: assertion `G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed

Deleting all darktable settings or starting with a clean user account does not change anything. Downgrading to darktable-1.2-1, ilmbase-1.0.3-1 (from ilmbase-2.0.0-1) and openexr-1.7.1-2 (from openexr-2.0.0-1) solves these issues.

can it be related to  FS#34869  ?

After todays full upgrade (pacman -Syu) everything seems to be fine again.

I can confirm this observation. With today's update to GNOME 3.8 the problem is gone. Could it be that darktable-1.2-2 was accidentally built against something from GNOME 3.8? That would explain why the seemingly harmless update of an image processing library causes all kinds of GUI malfunctions.

 FS#34869  is unrelated to this issue.  FS#34869  is rather a cosmetic problem, that does not impact the core functionality. The issue described in  FS#34869  can still be reproduced, even with the now working darktable-1.2-2.
