I can confirm the problem goes away patching mesa.

i915 must be loaded with i915_enable_rc6=0 option to boot without freeze.

My hardware (SNB) seems to be fine. Maybe it's because I activated SNA.

I'm not going to patch our mesa with a patch not even in mesa git master. Maybe kernel drm is also related.

For me the hang in gdm login was solved by manually removing gnome-screensaver (enabled SNA is necessary too on SNB). Since gnome-shell >3.7 makes gnome-screensaver deprecated, it could be removed on upgrading.
Can the OP check, if removing gnome-screensaver makes a difference?
