Detailshi there. the bc package in archlinux doesn't support readline, but without it its nearly unusable in interactive operation. when trying to compile it by myself, i get an error, conflicting types for readline, and "flex" is invoced by "make" with "-I8" as a parameter, but "-I" doesn't allow to specify one. (strange.. i guess another lexer supports.. uhmmm) its relatively easy to correct and works afterwards - would be nice if the precompiled package also had readline support.

I also need readline support for bc. Do I have to install Debian to get usable bc? ;)
this line:
make || return 1
became:
make LEX="flex -I -8" || return 1
Other than that it works great and I love having readline support.
