As indicated in this (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1257902) post on the forum, this seems to be related to upstream issues with the Intel driver (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62141).

Same problem on a Dell e6320 (linux-3.8.8-1, xorg-server-1.14.(0-2|1-1), xf86-video-intel-2.21.6-1 and gdm-3.8.1.1-1).

Using SLiM fixes the problem.

the same problem here and gnome 3.8 is stable now, so I got it after pacman -Syu
Xfce4 session starts with lightdm only

It's already marked resolved upstream https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62141

Update: looks like I misunderstood the status.
