Hello,
The title of archlinux.org (at the right-top) currently says: "An i686-optimized Linux distribution". Altrough this currently is true (except arch64) I don't think this represents archlinux correctly. When I was using other distributions I heard that archlinux was good but then I browsed to archlinux.org and read the title. I thought: "how can a distribution which is designed to only run on one architecture have any potential for the future, I mean, what if I buy another pc for another arch, what if the mainstream processor becomes powerpc. It will be impossible to continue using arch" Of course now I know that the reason that archlinux only runs on i686 and higher is not that it isn't flexible enough or because the devs don't like other architectures. It is because there just has never been someone creating reposatorities for other architectures. As a matter of fact I read that currently it is even possible to use arch64! It is very well possible to port archlinux to other architectures! (and everybody who uses archlinux knows that because they know how the reposatorities thing works, but people have never used archlinux and just browse the internet and look to the frontpage for 15 seconds and read a bit documentation or a review don't know that!) So I suggest changin this title. since I'm not a developper it's not up to me to choose a title but I think a title that represent the philosophy of arch would be much better that a title that tells one relatively unimportant thing about an optimalisation. Something like: "Archlinux: Keep things simple." (however you problably know better or more original names?) I'm currently using archlinux happily for more than a year now but I would have tried it much earlyer if the title was different. Thanks, David |
