this isn't caused by the ati driver alone, since the same one runs fine for me. i've seen a similar bug here https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=676884.

This can happen when the kernel runs out of memory to allocate. I'd ask around for assistence in #radeon on irc.freenode.net, they've helped me with a similar problem.
