It works, but you need to install the correct aspell dictionary to get a working aspell.

ah your right. The #gaim guys told me it used gtkspell and gtkspell-dev so I was thrown off. Maybe there should be a note in the install or something stating that aspell-<lang> is needed for spellchecking to actually work?

Aspell does in fact print such a message when it gets installed. Maybe it's a good idea to have aspell-nl, aspell-de, aspell-en, aspell-etc provide aspell-dictionary, so at least one of them gets installed :)
