In gnome-themes-standard 3.6, one of the new features was a GTK2 version of the adwaita theme. This new theme works using gtk2's pixbuf/pixmap engine, not gtk-engines. I think the dependency probably isn't needed any longer? Additional comments about closing: Fixed in svn. Moved gtk-engines to optdepends, as only the HighContrast theme still uses libhcengine for GTK2 themes.
